Our parent/teacher meeting went extremely well! I’d like to thank everyone who came and everyone who participated.

Our nursery thru 4th grades are already full and 3rd thru 7th individual classes are almost full as well.  The high school classes are over 1/3 full and with the July registration, I imagine they will be full also!  That’s so great and such a wonderful bonus for our kids.  They enjoy the classes so much better when they are full and have more group participation.

I will be sending out the syllabuses soon and which textbook that each class will require.  Please be looking for the dates sheets that I will send out this summer. It will give you our start and stop dates as well as the dates for dissections and art classes.

Again, thanks to each of you for such an incredible turn out.

Kristi!

Hello Everyone,

This is just a reminder about the parent/teacher meeting on April the 24th.  That’s THIS Thursday!  We will meet at Restoration Church in Spartanburg. Restoration is located at the junction of I-26 and New Cut Rd.  The meeting will begin promptly at 6:00p.m. and end around 7:30p.m.

There will be a babysitter available for those of you who have to bring your kids.  This is your opportunity to meet the teachers who have already been assigned rooms and to ask me any questions that you may have.  There will also be time for registration. This is our first opportunity to register your kids so if you want to make sure you get the classes you’d like, I’d strongly encourage you to try your best to attend this meeting.

The registration in July is so busy that I do not have time to stop and answer individual parental questions.  This is the time to ask anything you’d like to know about STARS.

Thanks and I look forward to seeing each of you there!

Kristi Walker, Director of STARS co-op.

I am pleased to announce that we will also be offering elementary Spanish and Spanish I for high schoolers.  Mrs. Angela Perry, who is fluent in Spanish, will be teaching this class for both levels. The high school class will be good for one high school credit.

We will be using the Rosetta Stone curriculum and administering the exams that go with this curriculum.  We are very excited to be offering this next year and hope to see you there. :)

April the 22nd is our last day of co-op this year!  I hope that all of you enjoyed this year as much as I have.  I know that co-op is a great deal of work, but the rewards are so much greater.

I encourage each of you to attend our parent/teacher meeting on April the 24th and let’s being planning next year’s co-op together.  Our children need this outlet to get the well-rounded education that we all desire for them.

I would like to personally thank each one of you for all your hard work this year. I especially want to thank our new parents who really stepped up to the challenge of making our co-op excellent.

God Bless each one of you.

Thank you and have a rockin’ summer, Kristi!

After reading a story today about a man who was tasered and later died, I feel the need to write this on our homeschoolers blog.   I don’t often give political messages on these type forums, but in my “real life” I do it on a regular basis.  Well, to anyone who’ll listen anyway. :)

The man that I’m referring to had an “episode” at work and his employers felt the need to call 911.  After refusing the ambulance to instead go to his personal home, the paramedics called the police. This is a pretty common practice, in and of itself, to keep the “blame” off of them. Sad that we’ve gotten to that point, yes?  But, it would seem that we have.

The police, of course, arrived in a timely manner and proceeded to ask the man some questions. To which he, rightly, stated that he simply was refusing the ambulance as was his right. He’d done nothing wrong and no one had implied that he had, he simply wished to go home because he wasn’t feeling well but not so badly that he couldn’t drive.  However, the police still wanted him out of the car to be questioned. Evidently, the man’s lack of speed to honor such a request caused the police to feel the need to taser him when he got out of the car rather angrily.  Again, completely within his rights.  Remember, he’d done nothing other than have a response to his diabetes.  No more, no less. And then refused an ambulance he had not called.

They not only tasered him once, but multiple times.  He died the next day.

I think it’s very easy to say, “Hey, why didn’t he just jump out of the car and do what they said to do?”   Well, maybe because he wasn’t 20 and still remembers what it’s supposed to be like to live in America as an American.  Back then, you were innocent until proven guilty.  Back then, you didn’t get tasered unless you were being violent, not just angry because someone was abusing their power. Back then, justice was justice and we were free.   Which reminds me of another story….

One day there was a pig that was free. He was free to eat what he wanted and go where he chose.  Just as long as he didn’t hurt anyone else, he was free.  Then one day, the pig found some free food.  It was choice slop!  So he sucked it up.  And everyday he returned to the choice spot for free slop.

Then one day, there was a gate that he had to go around to get to his free slop.  But, he didn’t mind. The slop was still free and it wasn’t that much trouble to go around someone’s gate.

Not long after, he showed up for his free slop and, lo and behold, there was a second wall beside the gate.  Well, that was ok, he could still reach his free slop.  So, all was right with the world!  After all, he wasn’t having to do a thing to get his slop now.

Following the second wall, the third one soon showed up. And the pig thought to himself, “Wow!,  I’m not entirely sure this is OK.  It’s getting kinda small in here.  What happens if that last wall goes up?”  And oddly enough, it wasn’t his freedom he was afraid of losing anymore.  And all his fear of being caged had disapated. Now, what was most important was his free slop.  After all, he wasn’t even sure where to begin looking for any other kind of slop now.  He’d been coming to the free slop spot for so long he’d forgotten how to earn his own.  And whoever was taking care of him so well surely wouldn’t cage him.  Right?

Well, with his fear of leaving his slop spot conquered, he just decided he’d lay down right there and take him a nap.  After all, it was a beautiful day.

And as luck would have it, when the pig woke up, the last wall was in place.  His free slop was now safe inside with him.  He would be taken care of now. He wouldn’t have to do a thing.  No work, no foraging for food, no running around trying to find his slop, no competing with all the other pigs for his share,  no running……period.  He was finally free.

But,  he soon learned that there is no free lunch.

I don’t know about you, but I’d rather look for my own and find it with my own merit, than be fed slop. Even if it’s free.

I’d say, that most have already laid down to take their nap.

We will be having a parent/teacher meeting on Thursday April 24th, at Restoration Church in Spartanburg. The meeting will begin promptly at 6:00p.m. and will end at approximately 7:30 p.m.  Jennifer Carr will be there for those of you who are interested in Geometry as will most of the other teachers who have already been assigned a classroom.

This is also our first opportunity for registration. If you know you would like to register your children for co-op, this is the best time to do so.  The classes that fill up will not be available for registration in July.

We will cover policies, procedures, regulations and parental involvement during this meeting. It is also the only substantial time that I will have to answer questions on a one on one basis.  At the registration in July, we are so busy that I simply can’t stop to answer specific questions for every parent.

We will be offering Driver’s Education in the 08/09 year.   We will offer the course once in November and once in March of 09.

The classes will run for 4 hours each on 2 days for 2 consecutive weeks. The parents will schedule the 6 hours of driving time required at their convenience through the certified instructor. Prices will be posted at the time of the classes.

These fill quickly, so if you’re interested you’ll need to sign up as soon as the class is announced.

Classes will run this year from 10:00am to noon and then we’ll break for lunch.  Classes will resume at 12:45 till 2.

Nursery:  Well, they’re babies so they’ll do baby stuff. :)

3&4 yr olds:  Crafts, art, phonics, playtime and snacks!

K5-1st grade:  Magic School Bus, Art, and social time with games.

2-4th:  Magic School Bus, Art, Geography, and study hall.

I’m pleased to announce that we will also be teaching Geometry at STARS this year.  Jennifer Carr, a certified high school math teacher, has agreed to teach our high schoolers!

This class will run for the entire year and fullfill the requirements for an entire credit in math.

I’m proud to tell you that in the 08/09 school year we will be offering English Lit for high schoolers. This will be a full high school credit class.

It will include British and English works with group discussions, compositions, plays and more.  We will cover satire, humor, drama, analogy and more in this class. It will be comprehensive and tests will be administered.

Mrs. Lisa Lassiter, who is a rockin’ English teacher, has agreed to oversee this class. We’re blessed to have her!
